Worldwide there are actually over 15,000 different types of ants!! However, in the UK we only have around 40 different species of ants and most common of all amongst those is aways the garden ant. They are a common summertime pest within the UK and can be a huge nuisance if they start to come inside your property. Ant infestation is common in areas such as kitchens, bathrooms (downstairs) and usually the ants nest (the source if the ant infestation) is in a skirting board or underneath a kitchen kick-board. 

Garden ants usually breed outside within garden areas but once the population increases, they can find themselves within properties on the hunt for food. A lot of people attempt to solve an issue with garden ants by using powder which is often a huge mistake and can lead to a much larger issue than you had previously.  

Most of the time when trying to kill an ants nest people can actually make the ant infestation far worse.  Most of the ants that you will be seeing will be worker ants, the sole purpose of these particular ants is to bring back food etc to the nest.  Killing these ants wont do much good as the queen will still be laying eggs at a high rate back at the nest which is usually concealed underneath or behind something.  If you go about killing these worker ants with powder or boiling water etc the queen may become alerted to the fact that these workers are not returning and feel the nest is under attack.  At that point she may produce a second nest nearby doubling the original problem .
